permadeath

Permadeath Information

Early development phase of information and details for a server with permadeath enabled.

What is the difference?

  • Permadeath enabled - When a player character dies, they are NOT automatically revived at their last save bed. The character leaves behind a corpse at the map or place that they died. The corpse needs to be recovered by another character so that the revive (i.e., raise dead or resurrection) spells can be cast on the corpse. Until this is done, the deceased player character can not be played or accessed (i.e., inventory, apartment maps, guild maps)
  • Non-permadeath - When a character dies, they are automatically revived on their last save bed. The revived character will lose stats (str, dex, con, etc.) and experience points in all skill categories. Lost stats can be restored using a Potion of Life relevant to their character level.

Enable Permadeath

Edit and make the following changes to the settings file typically found in “/usr/games/crossfire/etc/crossfire/settings” to match below:

# Makes death non permanent. If enabled and you die, you lose a bunch of
# exp, a random stat, and go back to starting town.
# If not defined, if you die, you are dead. If an a multiplayer server,
# resurrection may be possible
#
# This option changes the game significantly one way or the other - it makes
# adventuring right at the edge of death something more reasonable to do
# (death still hurts here). On the other hand, it certainly makes the
# game a bit safer and easier.
not_permadeth false
# define resurrection if you want to let players bring other players
# back to life via some spells. If resurrection is undefined, then a
# death is permanent. NOTE: resurrection (either defined or undefined)
# has no meaning if not_permadeth is true.
resurrection true

Revive Slain Characters

Revive Spells

There are three (3) spells avaialable in game to revive a slain character.

  • Raise Dead - Even in realms where death is permanent, there are ways around this. Casting this prayer over the corpse of a slain character will return them to life; however, the process is traumatic and the soul is only weakly tethered to the body at first, leaving the resurrectee with 1 hit point and costing them some experience points and Constitution. This prayer is is granted by Gaea, and is useful only if permanent death is enabled.
  • Resurrection - A more powerful version of Raise Dead, this prayer eases the return from death and tethers the soul more tightly to the body. Casting this on the corpse of a slain character will bring them back to life with full health, and the cost in experience and Constitution is reduced, although not eliminated. It is granted by Gaea, and is useful only if permanent death is enabled.
  • Reincarnation - Brings a slain character back to life, as with the Resurrection spell. Unlike Resurrection, it does not require a corpse, but incarnates them in a new body – usually as a different race, with all the associated benefits and penalties. It is granted by Gaea, and is useful only if permanent death is enabled. NOTE: this spell is currently not working, it prompts for the corpse of the slain player even though the description indicates a corpse is not needed.

Spell Casting Details

The character who is casting the revive spell

  1. Needs access to one of the working revive spells (see above) and have enough grace and casting level to cast said spell
  2. The corpse of the slain player directly in front of the spell caster
    1. The caster needs to be on the tile right next to the corpse (which is on the ground)
    2. The caster needs to be facing the corpse
  3. Cast the spell and if successful the caster will see an in-game message stating, “<playername> lives again!”

Revived Player

During the time that the character is deceased, that character is not accessible and does not show up in the Player Selection window.

At the character selection window:

  1. Click the Back button
  2. Then click the Login button
  3. Your revived character should now be available again
