The following are candidate descriptions for the spells in Crossfire. I believe I have all of those that can be known by a player at this time that do not currently have a description set. Any that are missing should be added, and anyone who feels they can improve on any of these is encouraged to do so. The names correspond to the filenames under the 'spells' directory in the CVS 'arch' module, which can be viewed using webCVS [[http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/crossfire/arch/spell/|here.]]

Large portions of this text have been taken from the large [[http://crossfire.real-time.com/spells/magic.html|spells list]] on the main site, and updated/modified to act less as advice and more as description.

AnimateWeapon/spell_animate_weapon.arc

msg
This spell imbues a weapon with magical energy, causing to fly around
under the control of the caster, striking at anything it runs into.

can be commanded in the same manner as a golem

A bolt of cold energy that flies forward, freezing whatever it hits.

Bolt/spell_manabolt.arc

A bolt of raw magical energy that flies forward causing magical damage.

Bolt/spell_sm_lightning.arc

causes lightning to fly out from the caster in a straight line, zapping
anything it hits, and possibly bouncing off walls in the process.

Bolt/spell_steambolt.arc

msg
A bolt of hot steam which both scalds whatever it hits
and leaves steam in the air, making it harder to see.

Bolt/spell_sunspear.arc

Valriel grants ths prayer to some of his followers to allow
them to blast their enemies with a hot, blinding light.

Bullet/spell_bullet.arc

A magically formed bullet, which will fly out and hit into
something, doing a small amount of damage.

Bullet/spell_cause_crit_wounds.arc

Followers of Sorig can acquire this prayer which will
do tremendous amounts of damage to whatever it hits.

Bullet/spell_cause_heavy_wounds.arc

Bullet/spell_holy_orb.arc

This causes a ball of energy to fly out which when it strikes something
calls down the wrath of your god upon the surrounding area.
All enemies of your god will take damage as a result,
and weaker ones may even be killed instantly.

Poison cloud fires a small globule of poison
which is released on impact to form a noxious
cloud that poisons anyone who breathes it.

A magically formed bullet, which will fly out and hit into
something, doing a small amount of damage.

Bullet/spell_small_fireball.arc

msg
This spell fires a small bullet of fire, that
explodes on contact burning anything in small
number of squares nearby.

Bullet/spell_small_manaball.arc

msg
Manaball fires a small bullet of magical
energy, that then explodes when it hits
something into a small burst of magical energy.
The great advantage of using pure magical
energy is that few creatures are resistant to
it.

Small snowstorm fires a small snowball that
explodes when it hits something covering
a small area around it with ice, freezing
anything therein.

Bullet/spell_vitriol.arc

A special prayer granted only to followers of
Gorokh, vitriol fires a ball of acid which
explodes on contact dealing vast amounts of
acid damage to whatever it hit, and anything
in the surrounding area.

Protection from confusion temporarily

Rage is a special prayer granted to
followers of Gorokh and Ruggili, it
throws the caster into a violent frenzy
increasing Strength, Constitution, and
several other stats for the duration
of the spell.

Regeneration increases the rate at
which the caster heals.

This spell may temporarily increase the
caster's Strength score by a small amount

Xray lets the caster temporarily see
through walls.

Cone/spell_banishment.arc

msg
The Banishment spell unleashes the power
of your god against his enemies. Any
creature disliked by your god will take
massive damage and all but the strongest
of them will be destroyed altogether.

Sends forth a cone of fire that burns
all that it hits.

Cone/spell_fear.arc

msg
A cone spell that causes all enemies
it hits to fear the caster.

Cone/spell_holy_word.arc

msg
The Holy Word spell unleashes the power
of your god against his enemies. Any
creature disliked by your god will take
damage and very weak creatures may be
destroyed altogether.

Cone/spell_icestorm.arc

msg
Icestorm fires a cone of freezing cold
air, damaging creatures caught inside it.  It
does have the side effect of encasing objects
in blocks of ice.

Cone/spell_mass_confusion.arc

Mass Confusion causes all creatures
caught within it to become confused,

This is a cone spell that paralyses
creatures caught within, leaving them
unable to move or attack.

Cone/spell_peace.arc

Peace is a special prayer granted to
followers of Gaea, it casts a cone, any
hostile creatures caught within cease
trying to attack the caster.

Slow fires a cone that reduces the
speed of anyone it hits.

Cone/spell_spiderweb.arc

msg
This is a special spell granted to
followers of Gaea, it spidersilk in a
cone that impedes the movement of
whatever it hits.

Cone/spell_turn_undead.arc

Turn Undead fires a cone, undead
creatures caught within this cone will
try to run away from the caster.

Detect/spell_detect_curse.arc

Detect curse will determine whether any
nearby items are cursed or damned.

Detect/spell_detect_evil.arc

This prayer will detect nearby hostile
monsters.

Detect/spell_detect_magic.arc

This spell will detect any nearby
objects that have magical properties.

Detect/spell_detect_monster.arc

msg
This spell will detect nearby creatures
that are currently hidden from view.

Detect/spell_show_invisible.arc

msg
This prayer reveals any invisible
things nearby, this can sometimes be
neccessary to show hidden levers or
other items.

Disease/spell_cause_anthrax.arc

Anthrax is a disease which can be fatal
to various animals

Disease/spell_cause_black_death.arc

msg
Cause Black Death is a prayer only
granted to the most devout followers of
the devourers. It unleashes the bubonic
plague upon whatever it hits. This
disease is highly dangerous, and
very contagious.

Disease/spell_cause_cold.arc

msg
Causes the targeted creature to catch a
cold, this is only ever fatal in the
weakest of creatures, but will weaken and
slow down any who are not immune to it.

Disease/spell_cause_flu.arc

msg
Causes the targeted creature to catch
influenza, this sometimes fatal to weaker
creatures, but it will substantially
weaken and slow down any who are not
immune to it.

Disease/spell_cause_leprosy.arc

msg
Causes the target to start suffering
from leprosy. Leprosy is a terminal
disease which can only be cured by
magical means. It can also be
transmitted by touch.

Disease/spell_cause_rabies.arc

msg
Gives the targeted creature Rabies.
endmsg

Disease/spell_cause_red_death.arc

msg
Cause Red Death is a prayer granted to
followers of the devourers. Red death
(also known as ebola) is very damaging,
often fatal, and highly contagious.

Disease/spell_cause_smallpox.arc

msg
Cause Smallpox is a prayer granted to
followers of the devourers. Smallpox
is very damaging and often fatal,
especially to weaker monsters. It is
also highly contagious, however, it
only affects humanoids.

Typhoid is a dangerous disease to
humanoids, but other creatures are
unaffected.

Disease/spell_cause_white_death.arc

Causes an outbreak of pneumonic plague,
which can spead rapidly, doing great
damage.

Golem/spell_call_holy_servant.arc

Causes the caster's god to send him a
servant, to control like a golem.

Creates a magical sword that flies
around under the direction of its
caster, cutting at anything in its

Golem/spell_mystic_fist.arc

Creates a magical fist that flies
around under the direction of its

Golem/spell_summon_avatar.arc

Causes the caster's god to send him the
most powerful creature available, the
avatar of the god himself. This
avatar will, for a short time, be
under the control of the caster, able
to be directed like a golem.

MagicMissile/spell_magic_miss.arc

msg
This spell fires a weak homing-missile.
This wil try and track towards the
nearest target, and can even turn around
to do so, but the tracking will ignore
any walls or other creatures in the
way, and the missile may hit into them
first as a result.

MagicWall/spell_create_fire_wall.arc

msg
A line of fire will appear, this
doesn't block enemy movement but any
creature crossing it will take fire
damage.

MagicWall/spell_create_frost_wall.arc

A line of frost will appear, this
doesn't block enemy movement but any
creature crossing it will take cold
damage.

MagicWall/spell_create_pool_of_chaos.arc

msg
Pool of chaos will deal damage with
all sorts of different attack types in
random order, anything crossing it will
be hit by multiple forms of damage.

MagicWall/spell_darkness.arc

Creates a wall that absorbs light,
making it impossible to see beyond it.

MagicWall/spell_wall_of_thorns.arc

msg
A special prayer for followers of Gaea
and Mostrai, wall of thorns creates a
barrier that slows and damages any
creatures that attempt to cross it.

Misc/spell_alchemy.arc

Like invisibility, only better,
attacking and using spells doesn't
cause the effect to end.

Makes the caster invisible, stops
working when they attack or cast other
spells.

Misc/spell_invisible_to_undead.arc

msg
Makes the caster invisble to undead
creatures.

Misc/spell_light.arc

msg
Increases the level of illumination.
endmsg

Misc/spell_magic_drain.arc

msg
Drains spellpoints from the target, and
adds them to the caster.
endmsg

Misc/spell_magic_mapping.arc

msg
Creates, in the mind of the caster,
a magical overview of the surrounding
area.

Misc/spell_marking_rune.arc

msg
Leaves a rune on the floor to be read,
the text of the rune must be specified
as an option to the spell.

Misc/spell_nightfall.arc

msg
A special prayer for followers of Gaea
or the Devourers. Nightfall reduces the
level of illumination near the caster.

Misc/spell_perceive_self.arc

msg
Displays a great many of the caster's
attributes, including some that are
otherwise hidden.

Misc/spell_probe.arc

msg
Tells the caster the relative strength
of the target, as well as how badly
wounded it is.

Misc/spell_transference.arc

msg
Transfers mana from the caster to
another creature. Transferring too much
mana can cause the recipent to be
overloaded by magical energy and explode.

MoodChange/spell_charm_monsters.arc

msg
The caster tries to convince monsters
weaker than him to join his side. When
it succeeds, the charmed monsters act
as the caster's pets.

MoodChange/spell_command_undead.arc

msg
The caster tries to convince weak
undead creatures to join his side. When
it succeeds, the charmed monsters act
as the caster's pets.

MoodChange/spell_conflict.arc

msg
A special prayer for followers of
Lythander, Conflict causes nearby
creatures to attack each other.

MoodChange/spell_pacify.arc

msg
Causes a hostile creature to calm down
and stop attacking the caster.
endmsg

MovingBall/spell_divine_shock.arc

msg
A special spell granted to followers of
Sorig, Divine Shock creates a ball of
electrical and godpower energy. This
ball heads in the direction it is cast,
and if it encounters a monster, it
sticks to the monster, dancing around and
shocking them continuously. The spell
has a limited duration.

A special spell of Gnarg, Poison Fog
creates a ball of poison.  This ball
heads in the direction it is cast, and
if it encounters a monster, it persues
them, poisoning its target. The spell
has a limited duration.

Rune/spell_antimagic_rune.arc

Creates an antimagic rune on the floor.
When another creature steps on it, the
rune will trigger, temporarily
preventing spells being cast from that
square

This creates a rune that will hit the
creature that activates it with cold
damage.

Rune/spell_rune_of_shocking.arc

This creates a rune that will hit the
creature that activates it with
electric damage.

Smite/spell_finger_of_death.arc

A special spell granted to followers
of the Devourers, finger of death can
cause a single target to die instantly.

Smite/spell_holy_wrath.arc

msg
The Holy Wrath spell unleashes the power

enemies. Any creature disliked by his
god will take substantial damage and
weak creatures may be destroyed

A special spell granted to followers of
Gaea, Insect plague summons a large
number of insects who act as pets,

SummonMonster/spell_magehound.arc

Creates a number of dogs to act as pets
to the caster. The type of dog summoned
depends on the level of the caster.

SummonMonster/spell_summon_cult.arc

Causes the caster's god to send them a
number of his followers to act as pets.

Swarm/spell_bullet_storm.arc

msg
Bullet swarm fires many bullets
in one direction, each doing
some damage.

Swarm/spell_bullet_swarm.arc

msg
Bullet swarm fires a great many small
bullets in one direction, each doing
a small amount of damage.

Swarm/spell_cause_many_wounds.arc

msg
A special spell for followers of Sorig,
this wounds a great many nearby
creatures.

Swarm/spell_missile_swarm.arc

msg
Missile swarm fires a great many
missiles in one direction, each
tracking individually and doing a small
amount of damage if they hit.

TownPortal/spell_town_portal.arc

msg
Town portal can be used to magically travel over vast distances
between two points. The first time it is cast, the surrounding area
is fixed in the mind of the caster. When it is cast again, at a
different location, a portal is made that links both locations.
The caster (and other members of his party) can use this portal to travel
instantaneously between the two points.
