These screenshots were taken on SuSE 7.0. As of Aug 2020, it is possible to run this distro and play Crossfire via Virtualbox, albeit after some X11 video and mouse fiddling.
Note that this version had a number of balance issues, for example:
* Killing an NPC fireborn would give you a glowing crystal that you could sell for 2000 platinum.
* Most spellcaster NPCs would drop spellbooks on death.
* If you know where to look, a mithril chainmail can be obtained as early as level 3 or 4.
* Even low level spellbooks like magic bullet would cost almost 100 platinum.
